Growth Regulator (Stance)

There have been some questions about the new growth regulator, Stance. Stance is mepiquat chloride with cyclanalid. Stance contains 0.736 lb/gal mepiquat chloride and 0.184 lb/gal of cyclanilide. Cyclananlid is the same thing that is added to Finish to make ethephon more active or more readily taken up by the plant. Stance is recommended to be applied at 2 to 3 ounces because it contains more mepiquat than other formulations and due to the dual mode of action. Most research has involved the use of Stance in a low-rate multiple application strategy or a modified early bloom strategy. It appeared to work well in our plots although there was not a lot of excessive growth.
One thing that is concerning for us is that we are having to play catch up on vigorously growing cotton in many cases this year, especially where rains have kept us from applying growth regulators as early as we would have liked. If you are looking at cotton you think needs 16 or 20 ounces of regular mepiquat will 3 ounces of Stance do the same thing? We don’t know and are concerned it may not. Data from Virginia suggests that 3 ounces of Stance will not “play catch up” like 16 ounces of standard mepiquat (Table 2). Hopefully we will get some experience this year to determine how Stance might be used in this situation.
Limited research with Stance suggests that there is of less rate response than with other mepiquat formulations. The rate response with Stance is not yet clear. It will take more experience to determine what rate of Stance is equivalent to a given rate of mepiquat in a given situation. In tables 1 and 2 below you can see how Stance compared to standard mepiquat chloride applications in 2005.
